Jacqui Self
Facilitator

Equine and Human Connections is part of Hills Occupational Therapy, a Perth-based practice set up by Jacqui Self in 2010.

An OT with more than 30 years’ experience, and a lifelong horse lover, Jacqui recognised an opportunity to combine her two passions - working with people to help them live healthy and fulfilling lives, and sharing her love of horses.

She has many strings to her bow - a qualified Bowen therapist, a volunteer at Riding for the Disabled, an equine Emmett Therapist and honours graduate with a degree in fine art and design.

In her own words:

My interest in equine assisted therapy started several years ago, when I found that interaction with my horses supported me through some of life’s challenges. The horses just have an innate ability to recognise when I am feeling sad or overwhelmed, and interacting with them calms me and warms my heart.

Jacqui is mum to three adult children, wife to David, pawrent to dogs Monty and Milo, and groom/muck spreader/food provider and giver of carrots (sometimes) to horses Danny and Raine.

Danny

At 25 years young, Danny is a grey gelding who has been there, done that and got the t-shirt.

A thoroughbred who spent his early years as a racehorse, he won lots of prize money for his owners (not Jacqui, sadly!), before making a career change to competing in dressage, show jumping and cross country eventing.

Danny has been a part of Jacqui’s family since he was nine years old.

A gentle giant, he will do anything for carrots and head scratches, and is the kindest gentleman of a certain age that you could ever hope to meet.

Raine

A mere baby compared to Danny, Raine is a beautiful 12 year old grey mare.

Raine became part of Jacqui’s family in 2024, and has proved herself to be a sweet, calm girl who loves human contact and interaction.
