What can EAT help with?
Sometimes we just need to get out of our own way –to silence the monkey chatter and listen to our heart and bodies.
EAT is at heart a facilitated but self guided journey towards overall well being. Together the facilitator and the horses create the space and framework that enables each individual participant to be fully present and experience a deep sense of connection with self.
Here are just some of the areas where EAT can assist.
Mental well being
There are many simple ways in which EAT can support good mental health. Basic, repetitive acts of grooming can help soothe you and promote feelings of calm. Walking can improve your mood, so simply leading the horse may help ease anxiety. Feeding and caring for the horse can help you form a bond.
Anxiety
Being close to horses slows our heart rate and lowers our blood pressure. We become calmer, and in a more receptive state to understand our feelings and anxieties.
Emotional intelligence
People who have experienced trauma are often expert at avoiding their emotions. This can make it difficult for them to recognise their feelings. In contrast, horses quickly sense how we are feeling, mirroring our emotions in their behaviour and body language. Recognising the horse’s behaviour enables the participant to identify and recognise their own feelings in a safe and controlled environment.
Communication
Horses are hyper sensitive to the way in which we communicate with them. Generally, people will approach a horse in the same way they would approach a person - confidently, aggressively, gently. They will communicate this not by their words, but by their gestures, tone of voice and posture. Horses can help you to understand your own communication style and the messages you may be inadvertently communicating.
If you are unsure whether EAT is right for you or your client, please get in touch and we will be happy to advise.
